“In less than 4 months, $1.37 million of underpayments had been appealed and $1.24 million of that actually collected. I have every reason to believe that we can increase revenues by $3-6 million annually using the solution.”
—Mike Butler, Chief Financial Officer, Providence Health System

Despite significant effort and investment, hospitals’ campaigns to halt revenue leakage from underpayments and denials have stalled. While this constant and preventable loss is a perennial concern, there are three catalysts driving this aspect of revenue cycle performance to the top of the priority list:
- Payers are passing on margin pressures to providers through increased payment scrutiny
- The ICD-10 transition will wreak havoc on revenue cycle teams and processes
- New payment models will require closer relationships with departmental stakeholders as well as payers
On June 1 and 7, the Advisory Board’s Payment Integrity Compass, powered by Concuity Technology, will host a webconference discussing the urgency behind these drivers, and we’ll review what a CFO should do now in order to avoid crisis in the uncertain future. We will examine case studies from our member hospitals and show strategies all CFOs can use to deliver expected reimbursements and reach the next level of payer compliance.
